The lotus grows in water. This one holds light.

This diya takes a different shape from the traditional round form — a teardrop, like a raindrop or a leaf caught mid-fall. Inside, a yellow lotus rises from green leaves on a turquoise ground. The rim is the yellow of marigolds. The base is unglazed quartz, smooth and pale, the way all authentic Jaipur blue pottery sits on the world.

It is 6 cm and entirely hand-painted. Light it with oil and a wick for puja, or arrange several across a surface for Diwali and let the teardrop shapes make their own pattern in the glow.

The Craft

This diya is made in the Jaipur blue pottery tradition — quartz paste body, mineral pigment glazes, every element painted freehand. The lotus motif here is not the geometric mandala of classical blue pottery but something more painterly: a flower with individual petals, stem, leaf, painted as if observed from above a pond. The yellow rim and turquoise interior are both mineral-based colours, fired at high temperature for permanence.

The teardrop form itself is shaped by hand — no two are perfectly identical in proportion, and that slight variation from piece to piece is part of what makes them beautiful arranged together.
