A garden in a jar.

On this jar, flowers grow the way they do when no one is directing them — in all directions, at different heights, leaning into whatever light is available. Yellow sunflowers with dark centres. Coral poppies mid-bloom. Green stems that climb and fork. All of it painted by hand onto a ground of turquoise that sits somewhere between sky and sea.

It is 16 cm tall and 9 cm wide, lidded, and useful. Tea, cardamom, dried flowers, cotton rounds — anything that deserves a beautiful home rather than a plastic one. On a kitchen counter or a vanity or a desk, it holds its own.

The Craft

Jaipur blue pottery is traditionally associated with cobalt and white — but the craft has always reached for colour. The turquoise base here is a mineral pigment, as are the yellows, corals and greens. Everything is painted freehand on a quartz-paste body that has been wheel-thrown and glazed before the artisan picks up a brush.

The lid is painted separately, with the same garden motif — buds and leaves arranged around the knob. The white stripe at the neck is a classic Jaipur border detail. No two jars are painted identically — the flowers shift positions, the stems take slightly different paths, and that is precisely the point.
