It has kept things safe for centuries.

The elephant has always been the keeper — of memory, of ceremony, of the things that matter. On this jar, two elephants in full royal regalia circle the body in an unbroken procession: caparisoned in turquoise and orange, adorned with gold anklets, moving through a field of deep cobalt with the unhurried confidence of animals that know their worth.

The jar is 16 cm tall, lidded, and built to hold something. Tea, perhaps, or cardamom, or the small things you want kept close and covered. It sits on any surface with the quiet authority of an object that has been thought about carefully — by the artisan who made it, and by you, for placing it where you have.

The Craft

This is a figurative piece — a rarer form in Jaipur blue pottery, where most work stays in the language of flowers and geometry. Painting an elephant in the Rajput miniature tradition onto a curved quartz-paste surface requires a steady hand and complete command of the motif. The white elephant, the decorated howdah, the floral plant between them — each element is painted freehand, in a single sitting, by an artisan who has spent years with this imagery.

The collar of the jar is painted in the classic Jaipur arch-and-cloud motif in white on cobalt. The lid is painted separately in a dense green and yellow floral pattern. The knob is glazed cobalt. No two jars are identical — slight variations in the elephant's expression, the precise arc of the trunk, the weight of the paint on a particular petal — these are the marks of a hand, not a machine.
