The diya is perhaps India's oldest object. A vessel, a wick, oil — and light that means something different every time it is lit. This one is made in Jaipur blue pottery: cobalt ground, white floral mandala painted inside the bowl, the classic spout that holds the wick in place while the flame finds its angle. Small enough to sit in a palm. Bright enough to change a room.

The Craft
These diyas are made in the Jaipur blue pottery tradition — quartz paste body, cobalt oxide glaze, white floral motif painted freehand on the interior bowl. The spout is shaped by hand and the interior pattern — a six-petalled flower with a circular centre, ringed by dots — is one of the oldest motifs in the craft. Each diya is slightly different. The variations are not imperfections. They are the evidence of a hand.
